Couples therapy in Bundoora

Couples therapy in Bundoora

You may still care deeply about each other and find that conversations keep ending in frustration. Perhaps you feel more like housemates than partners, are struggling to rebuild trust, or are unsure what you want your relationship to look like next. You do not need to have all the answers before asking for support.

At RM Therapy, couples counselling offers time to understand what is happening between you, talk about difficult experiences and consider changes that matter to each person. We work with your circumstances and goals, whether you want to reconnect, address a particular difficulty or make thoughtful decisions about your future.

Appointments are available at our Bundoora clinic and through telehealth, subject to suitability and availability. A standard couples session is 60 minutes. The current total fee is $214.50 including GST.

Support for the relationship you are in

Couples therapy can be a place to start a conversation that has become hard to have at home. You may arrive with the same concern, or with very different ideas about what needs to change. Both perspectives help us understand your relationship and what support may be appropriate.

Getting started

What to expect when you get started

First, tell us that you are seeking couples counselling. Our team will explain the appointment options and cost, and check what is needed before a session is confirmed. You can ask about the process without sharing your full relationship history with reception.

Before joint work begins, we consider each person’s willingness to attend and whether counselling together is appropriate. Private conversations with each person may form part of that assessment. We also explain consent, confidentiality and its limits, and how information shared individually will be handled.

Early sessions focus on understanding your concerns, your relationship history and what each person hopes to gain. Together, you and your counsellor agree on a starting point. Later work may involve reflecting on recent interactions, practising a different way to discuss an issue and reviewing whether the approach is helping. The pace and number of sessions depend on your needs; a fixed course is not required.

our fees

Fees referrals and your next step

Couples counselling is a private service. A 60-minute session currently costs $214.50 including GST. You do not need a GP referral to attend privately. We explain cancellation terms and any agreed additional charges before you begin.

A Mental Health Treatment Plan does not automatically cover couples counselling. Individual Medicare-funded mental health treatment is a separate service with its own eligibility requirements. Please ask our team about the service and fee that apply to your appointment before booking.

Request a couples appointment online or call 03 7046 4767. We will help you understand the next step, including any intake or suitability checks before confirming a joint session.

Our people

When individual support comes first

Feeling afraid of a partner, being controlled, threatened or pressured, or worrying about what will happen after a session requires a different response from everyday relationship disagreements. Joint counselling may be unsafe or unsuitable in these circumstances. Our clinical team assesses suitability and can discuss individual support and specialist family violence services. If you have concerns about privacy or safety, let us know the safest way and time to contact you. We will discuss reminder preferences and consent before sharing appointment information with a partner, taking any safety concerns into account. For confidential family violence support at any time, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit 1800respect.org.au. In immediate danger, call 000.

Our Purpose

How we work

Understand the pattern behind the argument

An argument about the dishes can carry concerns about fairness, feeling appreciated or being able to rely on each other. One person may want to keep talking while the other needs space. Over time, the way a disagreement unfolds can become as painful as the issue that started it.

In sessions, we can slow these moments down. We explore what each person notices, what they feel and need, and how their responses affect the conversation. Depending on your goals, the work may include practising clearer requests, listening without preparing a defence, recognising when a pause is needed and returning to unfinished conversations.

We also pay attention to strengths: the things you value about one another, ways you have managed difficult periods and what has helped you feel connected. Sessions should leave room for your relationship as a whole, rather than only its problems.

Working through trust and difficult decisions

When trust has been damaged, each person may need something different from counselling. One may be looking for reassurance, while the other feels overwhelmed by repeated questions. We make room to talk about the impact, the choices involved and what accountability and boundaries mean in your situation.

Therapy does not require you to forgive, reconcile or stay together. It also cannot guarantee that a relationship will continue. The aim is to help you understand your experiences and options, so that your decisions are informed and your boundaries are respected. Where needs differ or joint work is unsuitable, we can discuss individual support or other services.

Questions and answers

Couples Therapy FAQs

We welcome people of different genders, sexualities, cultural backgrounds and relationship histories. You do not need to be married or to describe your relationship in a particular way. Tell us about your communication preferences, access needs and anything that would help you feel more comfortable participating.
01

Do we need to wait until our relationship is in crisis?

No. You can seek support for a concern you want to address early, a recurring difficulty or a significant change in your lives. You do not need to reach a particular level of distress before contacting us.
02

What if my partner is unsure about attending?

No. A plan and referral may support Medicare eligibility for certain services. A private session can still have a gap. An approved bulk-billed appointment has no out-of-pocket service fee.
03

Will the counsellor decide who is right?

Yes. Tell our team what you are looking for and we can discuss other available options.
04

Can we attend by telehealth?

Telehealth may be available when it is clinically appropriate and both people can participate with suitable privacy. Our team will explain the arrangements and check suitability before confirming the appointment.
05

Is what we discuss confidential?

We explain confidentiality and its legal and safety limits before counselling begins. Couples work also requires a clear agreement about records, consent and information shared separately with the counsellor. Please ask about this before disclosing something you are unsure how to share.
06

How many sessions will we need?

There is no single number that suits every couple. Your counsellor will discuss your goals, suggest an initial approach and review the work with you. You can ask about progress or change your goals as the work develops.
